IN THE NINETEENTH century white Americans who wanted to demean the intellectual potential of black people often did so by employing a disparaging reference to their isolation from classical history and culture. In 1834, for example, Vice President John C. Calhoun, a native of North Carolina, said, "If I could find a Negro who knew Greek syntax, I would believe that the Negro was a human being and ought to be treated as a man."
