Maria Teresa Carlson, a former beauty queen turned movie star, once confessed why she wanted to bear a child each year by her husband, Ilocos politician Rodolfo "Rudy" Fariñas. It was not just because she adored babies, she said. Pregnancy was her only defense against his abuse. Six children and five years after she made that statement, Carlson was dead. Police reports said she had jumped to her death. She had been suicidal, Fariñas said. Women's rights activist Anna Leah Sarabia said she had been pushed to her death by more than a decade of battery.
