Maria (not her real name) was a first grade student who had been in the United States for only four months. We first met when I was a volunteer teacher in her class. When she saw me, she asked me "Ikaw ba ang teacher ngayon?" (Are you the teacher today?). I replied that I was the substitute teacher.
