When I studied Christian ethics in the liberal New York Union Theological Seminary under the neo-orthodox theologian Rheinhold Neibuhr, there was a very popular statement: "Religion is a formalization of the prevailing ethic." Last week's confrontation between evangelist Billy Graham and the former Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dramatized the issue raised by this statement for the current crisis Bill Clinton is facing regarding the relevance of morality in today's America.
