Washington Bureau gearing up for voting rights battle

Getting right to the point, Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington Bureau, gave Crisis the message he has been delivering to state conference and branch presidents: "African Americans are not going to lose their right to vote in the year 2007."
The message is prompted by persistent rumors, mostly over the Internet, that when provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 expire in 2007, black citizens will lose their right to vote.
