Let's Abolish Jewish Studies Departments.
The flare-up about the appointment of a non-Jew as head of the Jewish studies program at Queens College, and his indignant resignation a few days, is certainly not about learning.
Professor Bird, an expert in Yiddish, has been attacked, in part, because he knows no Hebrew.
I suspect that those who have attacked him could have themselves produced a list of directors of Jewish studies programs who know modern Hebrew but little history and no Talmud, or even one who knew much about the filmography of the Holocaust and not very much else.
