In 1933, the famous New York defense attorney Sam Leibowitz arrived in Scottsboro, Ala., armed with brilliant legal strategies but hampered by a northerner's naivete. He did not expect to see his own Jewishness on trial as he represented the nine black teenagers accused of raping two white women. Worse, he never anticipated that his identity might cause him to lose a case.
