MONTGOMERY, Ala.--For years, Jack Crittenden feared people might discover his secret -- that he was one of 50 Black seamen court-martialed for mutiny after refusing to load ammunition in the wake of a deadly 1944 explosion on two Navy transport ships.
When people asked about his military service, he told them he was in the Army. Even his wife didn't know he had really been in the Navy, and it was years before his children knew of his past.
