Black skin differs from other skin because of its pigmentation. Pigmentation is due to melanin. The pigment responsible for the skin's color.

The complex distribution of melanin in Black skin is advantageous because this dispersal affords significant photo protection from the ravaging effects of ultraviolet light put upon it by the sun.
