Lutheran church apologizes

Led by a young man beating an African drum, community leaders, residents and clergy came to Calvary Lutheran Church in Wilkinsburg to witness Bishop Donald McCoid apologize for the church's racist past.

"We confess that we have allowed racism to deeply wound and divide the Body of Christ," he said.

"...We have damaged lives, broken hopes and dreams and nourished the hate that festers in our society. In our foolishness, we have driven nails into Christ's body once again."

(For the complete text of Bishop McCoid's apology, see apology box on page A3.)
