Poverty rules Zambia 36 years after independence
ZAMBIA--Zambia has launched its 36th anniversary celebration with little to cheer about as grinding poverty and an AIDS crisis eclipse modest economic gains, analysts said.
The southern African country of 10 million people won independence from Britain Oct. 24, 1964.
The government has taken out full-page ads in Lusaka newspapers to launch the celebration and trumpet "progress" made since breaking from its colonial rulers.
