Abacha's son freed; to return stolen billions
|
NIGERIA--Nigeria said that it had freed late dictator Sani Abacha's son, held for over three years on murder and financial crimes charges, after he agreed to return over $1 billion of funds embezzled by his father.
A statement from President Olusegun Obasanjo's office said Mohammed Abacha was released from detention Sept. 23 after he signed papers agreeing to be under 24 hours surveillance and not to travel without official permission.
