One frenzied four-hour battle was all it took to prove to the world that on that bright March morning at Hampton Roads, Virginia, a revolutionary new type of warship forever changed the rules of Naval warfare

It was a three-and-a-half-hour battle heard around the world; the contest ending in a draw with both combatants utterly exhausted. Yet, while there was no clear-cut winner when the firing ceased, it was obvious that the confrontation between the small Union Navy USS Monitor and the lumbering Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia had made history that brisk 8 March 1862 morning.
