Study finds sickle cell anemia drug extends lives

BOSTON--The first drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration to ease the pain of severe sickle cell anemia also extends life, according to a study led by Boston University School of Medicine researcher Martin H. Steinberg, M.D., and published in the April 2 Journal of the American Medical Association.

The multi-center study found that sickle cell anemia patients who took the drug hydroxyurea over a 9-year period experienced a 40 percent reduction in deaths. Funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, the study was the first to evaluate ...
