Miles Dewey Davis III was born in Alton, Ill. May 26, 1926 and grew up in East St. Louis, Ill. The youngest of three children in a prosperous African-American family, he began to play the trumpet by age 10 and gained an introduction to the scene in nearby St. Louis with Clark Terry (Davis' elder by six years) as chaperone.
