What does the year 2000 add to our lives? It is only a digit in our numerated past and present. Dates are remembered because they mark the significant events of our lives. The millennium is no more important than Groundhog Day. If we, caught up in the hype, add to it some special significance, it may turn into a self-fulffing prophecy.

In the year 1000, peasants throughout Europe expected the end of the world. They did not plant. The world did not end, except for thousands of them. They died of starvation.

I personally take comfort in relating this to Jorge Amado's story of Dona Flor and ...
