It has always fascinated me that great performers invariably reach the heights in contrasting pairs. Early collectors of gramophone records vied with one another about the relative excellence of Felix Weingartner and Arturo Toscanini in the Beethoven Symphonies and even earlier were the Golden Age recordings of opera, when the highly dramatic Enrico Caruso's fans fought with the followers of the rich more lyrical beauty of Beniamino Gigli.
