In selecting the five most significant moments of the millennium just ending, I have taken the liberty of expanding "moments" to include "events." Some tremendously significant events cannot be tied to a specific moment in time.

A good example is my first choice (in chronological order). The publication of Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica occurred in or about 1265. We cannot specify the exact day, let alone assign a precise moment to the event, but there is no disputing its significance.
