CMS averts "train wreck" with HIPAA contingency plan

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on September 23 the implementation of a contingency plan to accept noncompliant electronic transactions after the October 16 deadline for compliance with the provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This plan was designed to ensure continued processing of claims from thousands of providers who were not able to meet the deadline and otherwise would have had their Medicare claims rejected.
