New York: Airlift plane, crew rescues ailing South Pole scientist

The New York Air National Guard's daring dash to the South Pole in a skirigged cargo plane Oct. 16 to rescue a doctor with a lump in her breast appears to be a flight for the books.

The six-and-a-half-hour, 1,680-mile roundtrip from the Antarctic coast in bitter cold may have been "the earliest flight into the South Pole [following winter] in the [70-year] history of the program," said Maj. Bob Bullock, spokesman for the Schenectady-based 109th Airlift Wing.
