A good map of Europe reveals a cluster of islands in the North Atlantic some 200 miles north of the Shetlands and 300 miles southeast of Iceland. The eighteen islands are home to 45,000 hardy souls, whose forebears settled these islands, primarily from western Norway, early in the Viking age. Famous for its storms and fog, the Faroe Islands seem as forbidding as its basalt cliffs, soaring skyward out of the tumultuous seas.
