System safety in design practice: Two work models compared
|
In the traditional approach to design, one team of designers and a second team of safetyreliability reviewers function independently and sequentially. This serial paradigm is costly-both in schedule time and in the expense of retrofitting designs found to be deficient.
In an alternate-and increasingly practiced-work model, designers apply the methods of system safety analysis and reliability engineering concurrently with design evolution, while system safety and reliability engineers foster the process.
