Proposal to ban DDT pits health activists against environmentalists

The United Nations Environment Program Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland is working on terms for an international ban on DDT and eleven other "Persistent Organic Pollutants" (POPs). These 12 pollutants include the following:

- Pesticides: Aldrin, Chlordane, DDT, Dieldrin, Endrin Heptachlor, Mirex, and Toxaphene.

- Industrial Chemicals: Polychlorinated biphenyls and hexachlorobenzene.

- By-products of combustion and industrial processes: dioxins and furans.
