Much has been written this year about the American Century exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, a decade-by-decade survey of fine art produced in this country. The two-part exhibit, which features more than a thousand works by artists ranging from Thomas Eakins to Keith Haring, has prompted critics to raise the question, What is American art? In studying the catalog and visiting the excellent accompanying Web site (http://whitney.artmuseum.net), I wonder how that question can be answered by an exhibit that-with few exceptions-ignores western American art.
