Much has been written this year about the American Century exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, a decade-by-decade survey of fine art produced in this country. The two-part exhibit, which features more than a thousand works by artists ranging from Thomas Eakins to Keith Haring, has prompted critics to raise the question, What is American art?
