Converting from funnel flow to mass flow Many old coal-fired plants have bunkers and silos with a funnel-flow discharge pattern. Storing PRB coal in such bunkers, which were designed for larger and drier particles of bituminous coal, increases the potential for spontaneous combustion and explosions. Wisconsin Public Service learned this lesson the hard way at its J.P. Pulliam Station as it was testing a blend of bituminous and PRB coal in 1991.

Wisconsin Public Service Corp.'s J.P. Pulliam Generating Station in Green Bay currently has six active units with a total capacity of 375 MW. Its first two units were built in 1927 and have been retired. The six units built between 1943 and 1964 are still in service and now collectively burn 1.5 million tons of Powder River Basin (PRB) coal per year, primarily from the North Antelope Mine. Each unit has a Babcock & Wilcox boiler and a turbine-generator from either Allis Chalmers or Westinghouse.

Each of the six boilers at Pulliam is fed by a coal conveyor with a maximum rating of 1,500 ...

PRB coal makes the grade Several months ago, when we began work on this special issue dedicated to PRB coal, our goal was to publish articles that address the issues facing every plant burning PRB coal. Discussions with the PRB Coal Users' Group helped us narrow the topics down to these: slag/fouling removal, dust control and collection, heat rate improvement, emissions modifications, and fire protection. Then we picked the brains of industry leaders in those areas. The articles in this issue bring those leaders' years of experience directly to you--which is what POWER does best.

Fire-protection guidelines for handling and storing PRB coal Most plants that burn PRB coal were not designed to deal with the fuel's propensity to ignite in bunkers, silos, and hoppers.
