In his recent book, The Nature of Rationality , Robert Nozick introduces the notion of the symbolic utility of an act (Nozick 26ff.). Although much has been written about symbolism and symbolic meaning, Nozick breaks important new ground in showing how the moral status of an act can be affected by that which is symbolized by the performance of an act (or by the process of this symbolization).
