Green plants appear to comprise two sister lineages, Chlorophyta (classes Chlorophyceae, Ulvophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae, and Prasinophyceae) and Streptophyta (Charophyceae and Embryophyta, or land plants). To gain insight into the nature of the ancestral green plant mitochondrial genome, we have sequenced the mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of Nephroselmis olivacea and Pedinomonas minor. These two green algae are presumptive members of the Prasinophyceae. This class is thought to include descendan...

DNA advancements, crop development renew interest in pond scum.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service
; WASHINGTON _ It was the most awesome invasion in all history, dwarfing the Allies' liberation of Europe in World War II. Its armies occupied not one but every continent on Earth, and they never withdrew. We're talking about the conquest of the land by pond scum _ properly known as green algae. It

Land plants' algal roots.
Science News
; Land plants' algal roots Scientists know little about how plants evolved from their green algal ancestors. The problem is plain: Primitive plants, lacking hard parts, made poor fossils. But botanists probing living organisms have inserted a new piece into the plant-ancestry puzzle. In the alga

Tracing the Evolution of the Light-Harvesting Antennae in Chlorophyll a/b-Containing Organisms1[OA]
Plant Physiology
; The light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) of land plants and green algae have essential roles in light capture and photoprotection. Though the functional diversity of the individual LHC proteins are well described in many land plants, the extent of this family in the majority of green algal groups is

Plant Physiology
; The desmid Closterium peracerosum-strigosum-littorale complex, which is the closest unicellular sister to land plants, is the best characterized of the charophycean green algae with respect to the process of sexual reproduction. To elucidate the molecular mechanism of intercellular communication

The Chloroplast Protein Translocation Complexes of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii: A Bioinformatic Comparison of Toc and Tic Components in Plants, Green Algae and Red Algae
Genetics
; ABSTRACT The recently completed genome of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was surveyed for components of the chloroplast protein translocation complexes. Putative components were identified using reciprocal BlastP searches with the protein sequences of Arabidopsis thaliana as queries. As a comparison, we
