ABSTRACT: Maintenance of denitrifying granular sludge for treating soft groundwater (total hardness [asymptotically =] 75 mg calcium carbonate/L) in an upflow sludge-blanket reactor was demonstrated with complete removal of applied nitrate (20 mg N/L) over extended operation and a hydraulic residence time of 34 minutes. A high pH of approximately 9.0 was shown to be important for generation of mineral precipitation needed for production of heavy granular sludge with good retention characteris...

Assessment of Morphology for Anaerobic-Granular Particles
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: This study shows that a proper assessment of granule morphology is fundamental before applying any mathematical derivation or empirical formula based on the shape factor of anaerobic-granular particles to determine granular characteristics. Retention of sulfate-reducing bacteria in expanded granular-sludge-blanket reactors
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: In acetate-fed, expanded granular-sludge-blanket reactors with a liquid upflow velocity between 3.5 and 4.5 m/h and pH 8.0 to 8.5, calcium-containing tap water tended to select for sulfate-- reducing bacteria, whereas demineralized tap water promoted methane production. In a formate-fed,
Anaerobic Treatment of Farm Waste: Opportunities and Challenges
Water Environment Research ; Wastewater treatment systems have used anaerobic digesters for stabilization for many years; however, traditionally, biogas has been used to generate electricity only at large facilities. Significant considerations in selecting anaerobic treatment and associated energy-recovery processes include
