Tragic loss of the bark Pamir
|
To the world and her stout-hearted crew of young sea cadets, the Pamir appeared indestructible for she'd weathered many a storm in her illustrious career as a training ship. But then fate intervened - proving once again that nothing is sacrosanct at sea.
The warm winds came off the western coast of Africa into the Atlantic on 2 September 1957. The winds met up with a tropical depression and on 5 September, became Hurricane Carrie. No one could envision that 16 days later it would claim the lives of 80 seamen, 600 miles southwest of the Azores.
