One of the year's sweetest deals was just forged in an industrial enclave in Jersey City. Curious? If you're a chocolate lover, you should be.

Two weeks ago Barry Callebaut USA of St. Albans, Vermont, the U.S. arm of the Swiss-owned Barry Callebaut Group, bought Van Leer Chocolate for an undisclosed sum. Van Leer, with average annual sales of $45 million, was one of the last privately owned chocolate manufacturers in the country. The company specializes in inclusions, the chocolate fillings found in ice cream and confections.

Tom Bartus, Van Leer's COO, calls the acquisition a partnership ...
