Illegal spraying of homes and businesses cost taxpayers $40 million

PASCAGOULA -- Illegal methyl parathion spraying of homes and businesses in Jackson County by an unlicensed pest exterminator led to a government cleanup program that cost $40 million. Now officials with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said new decontamination procedures have been discovered that cost 60 less.

Methyl parathion is a cotton pesticide that isn't considered hazardous for application to crops outside because the chemical breaks down quickly in sunlight. It doesn't break down indoors and can cause serious health problems in people or animals.
