Three years and 3 million fish later, the experimental stocking of kokanee salmon in Flathead Lake was declared a failure Thursday -- and ended.

Most of the yearling kokanee released into the lake were eaten by lake trout, most within a few weeks after stocking, a coalition of federal, state and tribal fisheries agencies reported.

Thus the decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to end the experiment -- which was intended as partial mitigation for the ill effects of Hungry Horse Dam on regional fisheries.
