Signature's stock sale turns up heat on execs

Signature Inns Inc. last week splashed onto the NASDAQ stock market after pulling off a $40 million public stock offering that gives the Indianapolis hotelier new financial firepower.

At the same time, though, the stock sale increases the pressure on Signature management to generate investor enthusiasm for company shares by racking up rapid growth.

Hospitality consultants say that's a tall order. Because of a lack of capital, until now the 23-hotel chain essentially has been on the sidelines as competitors locked up the best sites and threw up limited-service hotels at breakneck speed.
