Discussion and debate concerning the concept civil society has appeared in both scholarly literature and in the media. Perspectives reflected include (a) civil society as one of three major segments of a democractic society. The others are the market sector and government. Thus, civil society is seen historically as very influential in shaping the United States and Europe as we know them.
