Although there has been much debate over whether the new University System of Maryland-Hagerstown Campus slated for Washington County will go on land donated by Allegheny Energy at its Friendship Technology Park or in downtown Hagerstown, everyone agrees it will be a major addition to the region's roster of higher education institutions.

The University of Maryland branch will offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, focusing on junior, senior and graduate courses, so it will not compete with area community colleges. The study phase is underway; construction will begin ...
