Resistance to activated protein C (APC), typically due to a factor V Leiden mutation, is the most common cause of sporadic venous thrombosis in the general population.1 The reported incidence of APC resistance due to this mutation is between 2% and 7%.2 Despite the role of APC resistance in venous thromboembolic disease, a few recent studies showed no significant increase in arterial thrombosis in patients with this mutation.3-7 Conversely, a recent study of patients with factor V Leiden mutation revealed that heterozygotes have an increased risk of cerebral arterial ischemic events.8 In ...
