INTRODUCTION
Most plant and animal genes are members of gene families that are differentially expressed and may encode diverse protein isovariants. With the recent explosion of information in plant genomics, researchers have become acutely aware that the gene families in plants are at least as diverse as their animal counterparts (McGrath et al., 1993; Newman et al., 1994; Henikoff et al., 1997; McKinney and Meagher, 1998).
