STUDY OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of plasmapheresis on respiratory muscle function in patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). DESIGN: A prospective study. SETTING: A university hospital. PATIENTS: Fifteen consecutive patients with GBS. MEASUREMENTS: Vital capacity (VC) and negative inspiratory force (NIF) immediately prior to and 6, 12, and 24 hours after each plasmapheresis treatment. RESULTS: For each plasmapheresis session, there was no significant difference (p > 0.1) between the baseline (preplasmapheresis) and any of the 6-, 12-, or 24-hour postplasmapheresis VC ...
