IN THE PREFACE to the first volume of their three-volume commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, written in 1988, W D. Davies and Dale C. Allison predicted a renaissance in Matthean studies.' Nearly a decade later, in the preface to their final volume published in 1997, they could note that their prediction had come true.2 The avalanche of articles, monographs, and commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew has been extraordinary.3
