David and Flora Grossenberg's voyage down the River Magdalena is filled with omens. Their baby Sol is entombed in Flora's suitcase but emerges unharmed. A caiman materializes unexpectedly and bites the leg of a native child wading by the bank, but his mother whips out a knife and severs the animal's head. Then, unbeknownst to David and Flora, Father Belisario, a kindly priest and fellow traveler, secretly baptizes Sol, contriving to make Flora herself the instrument of the consecration.
