I first saw this large gathering of paintings and drawings by Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) in April when the exhibition was in Chicago. I had gone to the Windy City for a conference about the state of higher education in America (it's even worse than you thought), and had availed myself of the opportunity to take my first serious look at the work of a painter I had always associated with a certain fin-de-siecle ickiness.
