Bordering Albania and Macedonia, Kosovo is the southernmost province of presentday Serbia, which, together with Montenegro, makes up what remains of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Kosovo was originally populated by the Illyrians, an ancient people who inhabited the western part of the Balkans from about 2000 B.C.
