Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most ubiquitous and versatile minerals. Its availability, attractive physical properties and low processing costs make calcium carbonate the most widely used filler material in today's industry.

It is estimated that the United States currently consumes about 3.6 to 4.1 Mt/a (3.9 to 4.5 million stpy) of calcium carbonate.
