Discovering antique maps

IN JUNE 1998, SOTHEBY'S New York sold a first edition copy of the Ptolemaic Atlas for $1,267,500, a world record for an atlas. This remarkable example of 15th-century printing was the first atlas printed outside of Italy, but buying antique maps and atlases need not break the bank. Antique maps appeal to a wide variety of people and historically they have been under-valued. Most maps come from atlases which are broken up and a simple example will cost under $100 although it is usual to pay upwards of $2,000 for a more decorative one.
