Catfish biz treads water with higher production, but lower prices
|
Even though Mississippi catfish farmers produced 30 million more pounds of catfish in 2002 than the previous year, the value dropped nearly $20 million because of lower prices, a weak economy, and a growing import market.
In 2002, Mississippi catfish farmers raised 630 million pounds of catfish, valued at $242 million, compared to 600 million pounds of catfish in 2001, valued at $261 million, according to a study by Mississippi State University's (MSU) Research and Extension Center.
