A 1995 article on phylodes tumor1 favored simple mastectomy for the "borderline" or malignant lesions. Subsequent articles on this subject show twice as many local recurrences when only different types of local excision were employed. Included was a case of a 60-year-old woman with a necrotic 8-cm ulcerating tumor of the upper half of her breast who underwent a mastectomy in 1982. After 10 years of good health she developed a large 18 x 12-cm mass in her right posterior thigh. In July 1992 she underwent a wide muscle resection preserving the adjacent sciatic nerve.
