University-community collaboration builds capacity of Head Start professionals

Head Start provides a range of services to low-income families with preschool children. Even though most people identify Head Start with the preschool component, services are provided to the whole family, making the agency a good partner to family and consumer sciences. The need for academic partnerships has been amplified by a Congressional mandate that 50% of Head Start teachers must complete at least an associate's degree by Septembe,r 2003. This article highlights a 4-year university initiative to enhance the quality of Head Start services to the Hispanic community.
