I remember once telling some German friends that, despite having been brought up on a traditional musical diet of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Verdi I liked Strauss' music for its frequently electrifying vitality and almost palpable sensuality. They replied in that cryptic way which defies contradiction: "Wenn Strauss, dann Johann; wenn Richard, dann Wagner!""If you want a Strauss, then take Johann; if a Richard, then take Wagner!"
