Detailed knowledge of the techniques of torture and extermination has made us "understand" the outcome of nine to ten million dead. W hat bewilders us are the survivors. Through the flogging and the shooting, the cold and the hunger, the sixteen hours working day and the epidemics, through individual tortures and mass murder, thousands of them lived for years, three, five, eight years, and longer.
