Queen bridges centuries-old divide (by attending a full Roman Catholic service)

LONDON--In what is described as a bold gesture of ecumenism, Queen Elizabeth II attended a full Roman Catholic service last November.

The Queen, who is supreme governor of the Church of England, took part in vespers at Westminster Cathedral, breaking a centuries-old taboo against such an action.

As he greeted the Queen, Cardinal Basil Hume, Archbishop of Westminster, said the visit was a historic one, and recalled a previous gesture of ecumenism when the Queen invited Pope John Paul II to Buckingham Palace.
